Starting from Winston the route follows field paths and farm tracks to Whorlton. Returning on the Teesdale Way - 9 miles

Starting from the outskirts of Winston following the Teesdale Way, we made our way to the famous Winston Bridge  where in 1988 a spitfire plane flew beneath it for a TV programme. Then walked via Stoney Bank, Highcliffe Waters and Holme Wood to Grafts farm. The path then took us down to the riverside where it was presumed the Ford had been and the ferry boat crossed to Wycliffe on the opposite bank. We saw the remains of the Ferryman’s cottage in the woods and also a glimpse of the suspension bridge through the trees which was built in 1851.

We walked into Whorlton for lunch on the village green with perfect circular seating for all under a tree. Then back to Winston village on tracks via Low Barn, Osmond Croft and High Cliffs. It was a cool windy day but we missed the rain. 13 members walked. We enjoyed a well earned drink in the warm at Piercebridge on the way home!
