Can I try a walk before joining Richmondshire Ramblers?

Can I bring my dog?
No. Although many of our members are dog lovers and own dogs, it has been decided in the light of experience not to include dogs on our walks (assistance dogs excepted). This is due to most of our walking being on open moor and farm land where there are nesting birds and livestock.
Can I bring children?
We encourage children to join our family walks. For other walks check with the leader first as the walks are planned with adults in mind and the terrain and pace may not be suitable for children. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult parent or carer. The adult that accompanies a child/children is responsible for their safety and behaviour.
Will I need a map?
Only if you wish. The walk leader will have a map as these are guided walks.
How do I get to the start?
Members usually travel to walks by car and we encourage members to car share where possible. We operate a car-share policy: drivers appreciate a voluntary donation towards fuel costs. The suggested amount for this programme is the return mileage of 25p per mile plus any car parking charges, the sum of which is totalled and divided by the number of people in the car including the driver.
The starting point of the walk including the grid reference and postcode is included in the information on the walks programme.
How do I join a walk?
Telephone the leader in advance in order to book your place on the walk. Telephone numbers are on the walk programme. Remember to contact the leader if you are unable to attend the walk for any reason.
What should I bring?
A day rucksack containing sufficient food and drink to take you through the day. On day walks we typically have a coffee/snack break mid morning – many people take a flask. At lunchtime we stop for a packed lunch. You will need to carry enough water taking into account the temperature and length of walk. Bring your own first aid kit and any medication you normally require. In summer it is a good idea to carry sun cream.
What should I wear?
Sturdy walking boots and socks, a seasonal hooded jacket/fleece, trousers, (avoiding denim – not good if it gets wet). Bring waterproofs and some spare clothing including a hat and gloves, especially in winter.
How hard are the walks?
Our walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate and Strenuous. A description of each walk appears on the website. It is always possible to contact the walk leader with any specific queries about a particular walk.
Will I be fit enough?
A good level of general fitness is sufficient. Returning walkers or members new to walking may find it better to chose easier walks to begin with and then progress as stamina builds.
How far will the walk be?
Walks are usually between 9 and 13 miles. In the winter months the walks are generally shorter due to less daylight hours.
When do you walk?
Our main walking programme is on Sunday of each week. Most of our walks are scheduled to start at 9:30 or 10 am.
From time to time we organise short residential breaks further afield so we can explore walks in other parts of the country ,

Where do you walk?
Our routes generally start within a reasonable drive of Richmond ( about 1 hr) . Walks use public rights of way including footpaths, bridleways and open access land. We regularly walk in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors countryside as well as Teesdale, Nidderdale and the Howgills.
What else do Ramblers do?
Ramblers is a campaigning charity for protecting our National network of footpaths. Each group has at least one Footpath Officer who deals with all footpath issues. In our group this covers the Yorkshire Dales National Park in addition to Richmondshire and Hambleton areas.
Are there extra benefits from Ramblers?
There are discounts on clothing and equipment from walking shops. Members can join any Ramblers Group walks anywhere in the country and other groups who have a walk in this area. Details of all walks runs by Ramblers can be found on the Ramblers Website.
